ProvenanceLawren Harris, Sand Lake, Algoma employs the limited palette of cadmium green and yellow, and deep blue with the relief of the unprimed panel used in contemporary Algoma and Sand Lake sketches. This sketch evocatively conveys the complex play of afternoon light in a narrow part of the lake surrounded by woods: the setting sun’s light strikes the far shore while on the shady near side of the lake, light plays in the lake’s reflections of sky in the foreground and shade amplifies the form of the rocky outcropping in bottom right
