for Regulus II – Three of the spike-nosed new missiles are lined up as they come off the assembly line. The Regulus II is the second in a series of weapons for use on ships, submarines and at shore bases. In a recent successful launching, the missile was lifted by a two-ton auxiliary rocket. It flew 1,000 miles at a speed of more than 1,300 miles an hour. The 57-foot, eleven-ton pilotless aircraft can carry an atomic warhead to a pre-selected target. The Regulus II is almost twice the size of its predecessor, Regulus I, and is said to travel faster and to higher altitudes.
