ProvenanceThis lithograph addresses the popularity horse meat experienced in Paris during the Second Empire. People at first were skeptical of the taste of this meat, but increasingly accepted it as a fashionable meal. In this print, two servers holding large plates smirk and grimace as they are about to offer the head and feet of a horse to guests who have not yet been exposed to this type of meat. The image is quite grotesque and gruesome.
