Afghan civilians stand by a wall covered in graffiti depicting machine guns and two anti-coalition slogans in Pashto saying "Death for London" and Death for America" in an area recently pacified and secured by the US Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and British Forces in Garmsir District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Garmsir has been a haven for insurgents for the last several years. Earlier this year the Marines cleared the area after a period of heavy fighting and recently handed over control to British Forces

Image Not Available for Strategic Air Command – The Free World's First Line of Defense: SAC's new commander, General Thomas Sarsfield Power, has ordered that one third of SAC's striking forces must be in a state of continuous alert. When an alert sounds minutes are saved because only take-off checking is necessary. If a plane does not leave the ground even for a day, the long pre-flight checking is done all over again before placing the bomber on a "ready" basis. Here maintenance men examine equipment in the tail section of a giant B-52. (52-23849)

Zhari District, Kandahar, Afghanistan - A man believed to be a Taliban insurgent who was captured and detained by British Gurkha and Afghan soldiers is lead up a road during Operation Terrah Toorah in the Siah Choy area in Zhari District located west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan. The operation was a Canadian lead effort in coordination with the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Royal Gurkha Rifles from the British Army.
