Rick/Simon

Rick/Simon was born in Lucas County, Ohio, and moved to Canada in 1965 as a draft dodger. He has lived on Ward's Island for over 40 years with some intervals in Banff, Edmonton, Trinidad and Japan. He has been the designer at Coach House Press from 1968 to 1979 and from 1992 until now.

Rick/Simon purposely effaces his last name to re-emphasize anonymity. Regarding the spelling, the artist said: "It is ... the basic concept is 'either/or'. People interchangeably call me Rick and/or Simon. My football (soccer) mates call me Slash. . . During the most extreme of the anonymous artist period, I would respond to whatever name someone called me and make them stick to calling me that."
