Cal Lane
Cal Lane was born in Halifax and grew up in Saanichton, British Columbia. She earned a diploma in Fine Arts from the Victoria College of Art, majoring in painting in 1994, and then earned her welding certificate. She subsequently worked as a professional welder, but in 1997 returned to art school, attending the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, completing a BFA in Sculpture in 2001. In 2005 she earned an MFA in Sculpture at the State University of New York, Purchase.
Lane's extensive exhibition history includes solo projects at the Sculpture Center, Hamilton, New Jersey, 2001, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, 2003, Wynick/Tuck Gallery, Toronto, 2004, and regular exhibitions at Art Mur in Montreal. She has exhibited her work internationally participating in group exhibitions at Foley Gallery, New York (2006), Danziger Projects, New York (2007), and most recently Lace in Transition at the Design Center at Philadelphia University (2010).
She has taught sculpture at the SUNY Purchase, and also taught metal working at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Her knowledge and expertise as a highly accomplished trades-person directly informs her artistic practice. She was shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2004, and among several awards she has received is the 2006 Emerging Artist Fellowship and Residency at Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, New York, and in 2007 the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize granted by the Canada Council for the Arts to an artist of outstanding potential.
