Butler is an artist who has become internationally recognized and respected for his activity in the realm of multi-disciplinary, social and alternative pedagogical practices. His ongoing projects include hosting the Collage Party (an itinerant and ongoing event that merges making art and community-building that he established in) and directing the operations of The Other Gallery, (a web-based project that aims to bring attention to the work of under-recognized artists that until its very recent closure, had been running since 2001). In 2007, he founded the UpperTradingPost.com, a website that facilitates artist trading, and in 2008, he initiated the experimental school Reverse Pedagogy that began at the Banff Centre for the Arts, and has since travelled to the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009), The Model, Sligo Ireland (2009), and to the European Culture Congress in Wroc?aw, Poland (2011). Butler has exhibited his work at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Toronto (2008); Creative Growth Art Centre, Oakland, CA (2007); the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2006); White Columns, New York (2006); and Sparwasser HQ, Berlin (2004). Most recently, his work was presented at Parisian Laundry, Montreal (November 2011); in the Toronto Now series at the AGO (September 2011); and in the group exhibition My Winnipeg at La Maison Rouge, Paris France (June 2011). Butler is also a curator of note and this role, has presented the work of an international roster of artists including Matthew Higgs, Mitzi Pederson, Harrell Fletcher, Guy Maddin. He has contributed writings to the book Decentre: Concerning Artist-run Culture (2008) and to the magazines Canadian Art and Hunter and Cook.
