Joseph RebellAustrian, 1787 - 1828

Joseph Rebell was influenced by classicism and by heroic depictions in the manner of Claude, in particular during his early years. Of decisive importance was his long stay in Italy: in Milan, Naples and Rome, where he was influenced by such artists who also worked in Rome, Joseph Vernet and Joseph Anton Koch, that he turned to vedute. However, only after being appointed Director of the Imperial Picture Gallery in the Belvedere in Vienna by Emperor Francis in 1824 does he seem to have come into his own as a landscape artist.
