Dr. Frederick Grant Banting (1891-1941), physician, who in 1921 together with Dr. C.H. Best discovered insulin as a treatment for diabetes, was awarded the Nobel Prize for 1923, in recognition of this great contribution to medicine. In the same year he was appointed the first professor of medical research in the University of Toronto. He was created a knight commander of the civil division of the Order of the British Empire in 1934. A friend and supporter of the arts, Dr. Banting was also a painter of some merit
