Louis Rousseau became the first photographer at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. He had received instruction from Hippolyte Bayard and Niepce de Saint-Victor, two of the earliest practitioners in photography. Rousseau spent seven years photographing the subjects in this collection between 1855 and 1862 when he was succeeded by Philippe-Jacques Potteau.
