Paul Sandby

Artist Info
Paul SandbyBritish, 1731 - 1809

Paul Sandby's initial training by his older brother, Thomas Sandby, a respected architect; provided the basis for a long career as a landscape painter, printmaker and draughtsman. The influence of his sibling and his early career as a topographical draughtsman of maps for the Scottish military resulted in Sandby's precise, articulate style. His sensitive line and interest in light effects are evident in his etchings, and he published many printed series of his travels across England. He solidified his reputation, by becoming a founding member of both the Society of Artists of Great Britain (1760) and the Royal Academy of London (1768).
