Born in Tokyo, Japan on Jan. 21, 1894, the son of a wealthy merchant, Yoshida Sekido studied art in his native city and in his early teens his work was accepted in the Imperial exhibition. He was apprenticed to Kanyu, a local master, and then for seven years under Takeuchi Seiho. By age 26 he had achieved fame in Japan, having taken top prizes in national exhibitions. In 1921 he continued his art study in Canada at the Ontario College of Art, and in 1922 began a seven-year course of study at the ASL of NYC under George Bridgman. During his years in New York City, he had several successful solo exhibitions.
