Domenico Quaglio, the youngerItalian, 1787 - 1837

Born in Munich to Italian parents, Domenico Quaglio the Younger followed the artistic path of his family, whose Italian set designs dominated the court theatres of Germany for many generations. As a young boy he studied with his father, and at the age of sixteen began to paint architectural stage sets at the Hoftheatre in Munich. After fifteen years devoted to theatre decoration, Quaglio took up painting and drawing architectural landscapes and genre. His travels through France and Germany provided the inspiration for most of his work, as he recorded scenes of everyday life in city squares, panoramic vistas, and architecture, both sacred and secular.
