ProvenanceA military officer announces to Pedro, the King of Portugal, that Lisbon has been taken. This print mocks the Portuguese King, who is stretching and yawning as he gets out of bed, and clearly did not have much to do with his ascension to power. The King is only half dressed and does not appear to be savvy in combat, yet he says to the officer that he dreamt he was fighting courageously (presumably in the battle to recover the throne of Portugal). The capture of Lisbon was made possible with England’s and France’s assistance.
