ProvenanceLaurent Cunin-Gridaine (1778-1859), like a few of the other celebrity politicians depicted by Daumier, used to be a liberal during Charles X’s reign. Cunin-Gridaine even advocated for liberty of the press at that time. However, under Louis-Philippe’s rule, Cunin-Gridaine wanted to condemn public hawkers and was pleased to see the 1835 press censorship laws passed by the government. He was viewed as a turncoat by the liberal press. In Daumier’s print, Cunin-Gridaine’s hairstyle resembles that of Louis-Philippe and his expression evokes evilness. Philipon’s team nicknamed him “cul-nain” (short-arse).
