ProvenanceDaumier’s image is set offstage at a public fundraiser where a man accompanies an elegantly dressed woman. According to the caption, these figures danced at a benefit for Polish people. Social aid for workers and individuals from different ethnic backgrounds was extremely limited in France at the time. Private philanthropic societies provided support for those in need, but members of these groups did not always have the best of intentions. Instead of offering food to the poor, the man suggests to the woman to go out for dinner to celebrate their deed. The print implies that generosity from the rich was limited rather than abundant.
