ProvenanceThis print belongs to the Tout ce qu’on voudra series, a set of prints completed in a similar nature to the Les Bon Bourgeois lithographs. A man and a child (likely a father and a son) are smoking pipes in an interior space. The man claims that the only way of differentiating men from the other animals is by smoking. The father is clearly teaching his son a bad habit, and in the process, proves that he is not wiser than an animal. He is not an informed philosopher, but rather a rag picker sharing his unenlightening thoughts, demonstrating that a “chiffonier” does not have a proper place in any context.
